April 19, 2011 – Don’t know much…

Good insights passed on.

Today I RID this book about history as written in classroom textbooks around the world.

I really liked this book. I think there’s so much to be gained, for example, by learning how British textbooks cover the American revolution; how Korean textbooks cover the Cuban missle crisis, etc.

As I RID it today, I remind myself to always read with an eye towards the bias/POV of the writer. It’s something I always think about when I read a newspaper, but don’t always stay so mindful of when I read a nonfiction book, etc.

Here’s to a mindful eye.

April 18, 2011 – Wrong indeed.

Well, for starters...

Today I RID this book about why people vote in a way that is against their self-interests.

In short, it’s because they are manipulated to vote on fringe issues (gay marriage, prayer in school, etc.) which act as a smokescreen against the issues they should be paying attention to.

And, as I RID this book today, I make a commitment that I’m going to see what I’m missing.

To look beneath the surface.

To see what I SHOULD be paying attention to, rather than just what’s obvious.

April 17, 2011 – Freshman year.

Brings back memories.

RIDding this book today about someone who spent time as a “freshman” in college in an investigative sense.

My daughter is coming to Dallas next week as part of a club volleyball team, and this book makes me think about her upcoming freshman year.

It reminds me to be available, present, and curious.

In fact, that’s good advice…for everyday.

April 16, 2011 – Smart mobs.

Smart indeed.

RIDding this book today about communities online, how they form, and what it means.

Rather than taking a whole lot of time to write about communities in my blog post today, I think I’ll go outside and participate with a few.

See you tomorrow…

April 15, 2011 – CDs, the S’s.

S..........o many.

Ah…a CD day…the largest letter of the collection…the “S.”

Some highlights:

Son Volt – Who knew I could ever like country music, even alt-country. Apparently, these guys did.

Jill Sobule – a TED discovery. Still one of the funniest, sweetest, and most interesting songwriters today. Kind of today’s female Randy Newman, in my opinion.

Smashing Pumpkins – It seems to me they’re always forgotten in the conversations about the grunge scene and when it arrived. I marvel at how fresh and interesting their recordings STILL sound.

Soundgarden – Never forgotten in the above conversation. “Black Hole Sun” might be one of my top 10 favorite songs ever.

Smithereens – It’s amazing how well these guys’ sound has held up through the years. Still thrilled to hear them enter my headspace during a “workout shuffle session.”

April 14, 2011 – Bunch o’ caps.

A capper of a blog entry.

Today, I RID myself of a few baseball caps I haven’t worn in a long time.

As a person who shaves his head, caps come in handy in the midday Texas sun.

That having been said, I haven’t worn most of these in quite some time, and it’s time for them to go. I’ve still probably got about 5 baseball caps left anyhow.

So off they go today, to protect someone else’s head now.

April 13, 2011 – Choke.

For someone else now.

Saw this movie in a theatre a few years ago – and thought it had enough promise to watch it again.

So I did.

And uh, just didn’t quite make the cut.

This is a good example of what the RID project is all about – there are a lot of items in my home that I thought, “Oh, I don’t really want to buy that…but I’m here at the store…and it’s cheap…maybe I’ll just pick it up.”

One of the things I’ve noticed since starting this project is that I’m buying more online – and actually thus not buying many things on impulse.

Here’s to considered purchases…

April 12, 2011 – Cleats.

Cleats. Just cleats.

Used to play on an ad agency softball team.

Don’t now.

Goodbye, cleats…

Not quite sure why I was hanging on to you.

(BTW, I should mention — I’m still open to playing on recreational teams – just not willing to store equipment specifically for this purpose anymore. I’m not RIDding the glove. So, if your team needs a shortstop, just sayin….)

April 11, 2011 – On companionship.

Bye now.

This frame contained a picture of a dog that used to be in my life.

Once the relationship ended, the dog (and the woman) went their own way.

As I RID this today, I think about companionship. The fact that, I believe, all of us NEED people. Others — to love us, to hold us, to challenge our thinking.

So, today…I’m going to make an effort to let those in my life who play this role…know it.

And know how much I appreciate them.

April 10, 2011 – Basketball.

Jumpball.

One of TWO basketballs I own,

So, this one is off to the RID pile.

If you’ll excuse me — I’m going outside to shoot a few hoops.
