October 6, 2010 – Denon…done.

Seriously, how much stereo equipment does one man need?

This little stereo unit has served me well for a long, long time.

In fact, as I look at this unit today — I think about my life, my career, and what has changed.

I first bought this to be my principal stereo several years ago. As my career has progressed, this item has gone from being in my living room, then to the bedroom, I moved it into the second bedroom, then the office, and it’s now been living in my closet for some time.

Wonder which of my dreams, my intentions at that point in my life I could say the same about? What used to be at the forefront – but, little by little, have been moved to a space where I don’t think about them much anymore?

Hmmm…..

October 4, 2010 – Tivo, number two.

Goodbye, saved programs.

This is the second Tivo I’ve given away on the RID project.

I was hanging on to it not for the machine itself, but because I had shows saved on it that I was “going” to watch someday.

A few years later, the shows still sit on it, unwatched.

Time to disconnect the wires, and cast it onto the top of the RID project.

Goodbye Tivo…and goodbye unwatched shows.

October 5, 2010 – Can you hear me now?

Kind of a "stuff for stuff" thing.

Today I RID myself of a Sony amplifier.

This is the amplifier that, in the past, powered the surround sound speakers I gave away a couple of days ago.

Short entry today – as I’m traveling.

October 3, 2010 – Sound, sound everywhere.

Still work great, but I've got two pair.

Here’s a great set of computer speakers. While they sound great, they are a duplicate set.

So, off they go.

Looking at these today has given me pause about how much accessorizing of EVERYTHING we do. We buy extra speakers for our TVs, our iPods, our computers…all of it.

So…here’s a set that hopefully will make someone happy. They certainly have made me so.

October 2, 2010 – The Moral Dimension of Marketing.

Insert your own oxymoron joke here.

So here’s a book I bought a while back to help me investigate where philosophy meets marketing.

I’ve been thinking lately about how American culture doesn’t allow for much reflection, solitude, or simple contemplation.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of that lately, and this blog has helped me do that — by giving me a little time each morning to reflect on stuff, memories, and what I care about moving forward.

I never thought I’d say this – but I’d recommend EVERYONE write a blog. It helps you connect with what’s important to you — and in fact, if you make it a daily ritual as I have, it’s something you actually look forward to every morning to get your thoughts together, and your day started.

Happy blogging all.

October 1, 2010 – Surrounded.

I've "surrounded" myself with stuff.

Today I give away 4 surround sound speakers.

I’ve had these for quite a while, and they were just sitting in a closet, gathering dust.

I remember the first time I ever saw TV with good surround sound–I had to have it ASAP. We always talk about what “TV used to be like” — before cable, before digital, before plasma, before remotes. But the thing I notice most is the sound – and how it’s upgraded over the years.

Here’s hoping these speakers upgrade that experience for someone who needs it.

September 30, 2010 – CDs (the D’s.)

Let's face it...there's something wrong with Dylan recording digitally anyway.

Last day of September…CD day. Today, ones beginning with the letter “D.”

A couple of highlights…

Decemberists – a band I originally discovered at the Sasquatch music festival in Washington State. I remember being just mesmerized as I watched the young clubbing kids dancing enthusiastically at a band that, among other things, uses an accordion while playing prog rock.

Drive-By Truckers – a Bumbershoot find. While I think it’s possible that the best days of this band are behind them, they put on a great show, and if you have a chance to see them live…do it. You won’t regret it.

Dylan – I’ve come to appreciate Dylan a lot more now than when I was young. While the reviews of his latest concert appearances suggest maybe it’s time for him to hang up his touring shoes, it’s hard to beat the sheer poetry this guy’s laid down over his lifetime.

Ok, on to October…

September 29, 2010 – Luggage, again.

Going on the road.

It’s another travel day for me today…another chance to RID myself of some luggage.

I bought this TUMI bag a year or so ago…and I bought it for the style…I like it…a lot.

However, the piece just has a couple of flaws that make it impractical for my needs.

Here’s to future considered purchases…travel or otherwise.

Short post today…just can’t think of anything to say about travel and luggage that I haven’t blogged about before.

Til’ tomorrow…

September 28, 2010 – Outward dog.

Never used.

Ah….yoga.

I began my yoga practice a couple of years ago…and have really fallen out lately.

I received the mat pictured above after a photoshoot where it was used for a prop – I had every good intention of using it, but still never have.

Nothing seems more “mindful” to me than today…releasing it into the world.

Here’s to this yoga mat finding a new student eager to learn the benefits of breathing and mindfulness.

And for me…here’s to renewing my yoga practice in a way free from worldly possessions like yoga mats.

Breathe…

September 27, 2010 – Yard tools.

No yard? - Not necessary.

So, I’m really enjoying NOT being in a house right now.

After you’ve owned a house, you really enjoy the low maintenance of an apartment again. No yard, someone (most times) to receive your deliveries,…etc. You can spend your weekend enjoying your life, rather than caring for your stuff.

That having been said, there’s something I’ve been thinking about lately.

I don’t touch the earth.

I don’t dig in the ground, plant things, etc.

My work, and my life, is lived primarily for information. The truth is…I usually deal in ideas…not in atoms. And I think I might be missing out on something.

This post is giving me inspiration to think about doing some experiences on the weekend that get me dirty. That force me to recognize the earth, the soil, the water perhaps.

Here’s to upcoming weekends…and the gritty feel of soil.
