July 18, 2011 – Random CDs (Post 1 of 3)

Just a few of the hits.

The next 3 days, I’m going to RID my last 3 CD entries.

But, you ask…I thought that these were given away by letter? How are there any left?

The ones that are left remain due to three reasons:

1. They were purchased AFTER I gave away their letter.

2. They were stored in a separate place, and I found them later.

3. For some reason, I was thinking about holding on to them, but later decided not to.

So, today is the first of 3 RIDs of the final CDs.

Not really much to say other than that.

July 17, 2011 – On originalism.

The Holy Trilogy.

Ah – the unexpected Star Wars RID.

I, like most people in my age group, loved the original.

And yes, Empire? Clearly the best of the series.

So, it makes sense that I’d want to own these movies, and share them with others.

The problem? This boxed set includes the “improvements” Lucas made to the films. And I’m sorry…they’re not improvements.

Neither (of course) was Episode I.

So, today I RID the original trilogy…that isn’t the original.

And preserve the great memories of my childhood in the process.

July 16, 2011 – Glued to the set.

Make room for new headspace.

This book, about the TV shows that shifted American culture, was a good enough skim/read.

But today, as I RID it, I think about not just RIDding the book, but maybe how much television I watch as well.

One of the first “headspace” RIDs  I guess.

More coming soon.

July 15, 2011 – CDs, the Z’s.

Wait, is everyone with a last name starting with Z named "Warren?"

Warren Zanes and Warren Zevon.

Simple enough RID for the last of the “letter driven” CD giveaways.

And with that, the former CD shelf looks as empty as could be.

Or is it (3 CD posts coming soon.)

July 14, 2011 – Flagwavering.

Never really spent much time with this one.

This is the kind of book I used to purchase that made the RID project so good for me.

It’s a sociological study of where people display American flags, and what the symbolism means.

A fascinating topic, if you ask me.

But, after a couple of years of this book languishing on my shelf…I have to ask…maybe not fascinating enough? At least to me?

Here’s hoping the next person who receives this book gets out of it I thought I was going to.

July 13, 2011 – A few good men.

Kind of a classic.

I’ve never really been a fan of Tom Cruise.

But, I have to admit..when he brings it…as he did in this movie? Pretty darned impressive.

So, today I RID a movie I remember well.

After all, who can’t quote the famous Jack Nicholson scene at the end?

So…why not RID something you well enough to quote? If ever there was a good reason to RID something, that’s it.

Because you’ve already experienced it.

And the memory is probably more powerful that re-experiencing it anyway.

July 12, 2011 – Dogma.

Question it.

The RID project has changed my way in a substantial way about the ownership of content.

Today, I give away Dogma. (Seemed appropriate.)

It’s a movie I love.

I know I’ll watch again.

I’ll wanna share with someone.

But – you know what? It’s available to rent – whenever I need it. Rather than holding on to a copy.

Something I believe about a lot of things now.

Thanks, RID project.

July 11, 2011 – David Cross.

Hilarious.

If the next person who gets this DVD gets half the laughs I do from David Cross….it’ll be worth it.

One of just a handful of comedians who portrays current events in the light they need to be seen in, David Cross is bringing social commentary to the next level.

And boy oh boy – do we need it.

July 10, 2011 – The trick sometimes is not ever to take possession.

Goodbye.

This may be my proudest RID ever.

I received this as part of my TED bookclub mailing. I realize I’ll never read it…so why even take possession?

It goes off to someone else today.

Allowing  them to read, treasure, and care about this book…in a way that I never would.

So…off it goes.

Without much more than a glance.

July 9, 2011 – Monet.

Not really my thing.

Yesterday, Renoir.

Today, Monet.

Suffice it to say…my coffee tables getting more organized.

And for me? I’ll keep ONLY the books of art that truly connect with me.

So, don’t expect to see any contemporary artist collections on this blog.

Because now? There’s room for them on the coffee table.
