June 8, 2011 – On belief.

Seemed impossible to resist.

Today, I RID this book about the “power of impossible thinking.”

Frankly, I’m not sure when or where I got this book — it seems a little like “The Secret” for business. And, as an atheist who thinks “The Secret” is a bunch of hooey — I’m not sure why I would’ve bought this book.

I AM a big believer that humans are people who need to BELIEVE in something. And I believe we need to believe.

Here’s to challenging my own beliefs moving forward.

June 7, 2011 – On loyalty.

Too much time spent unread...so...off it goes.

Today, I RID this book created by my favorite online site…The Onion.

It’s been sitting around on my bookshelf languishing too long, so today…it goes. I’m actually thinking about a new post-RID project rule – A year spent unread? Off it goes.

Might be good future think, post-project.

I originally bought this book because I’m so loyal to the Onion – their wit is so good, so timely. But, I just never found the motivation to read this book.

So, today…as I RID it…I think about the inertia that comes from loyalty. Just keeping “doing what you’re doing.”

Here’s to challenging if you should stay loyal or not.

June 6, 2011 – Intuition.

Something's telling me to give it away.

Two days ago, I RIDded a book about gut feelings.

Today, intuition.

Really, all the same reasons.

So, not really a lot else to say about it.

So, I’m going to follow my gut…and RID the need to wax on further.

June 5, 2011 – Can marketing be beautiful?

Some would argue...oxymoron.

I find it shocking how many companies produce inelegant, ugly communications and marketing.

If a company can’t care enough about its own self-image, how am I supposed to believe in the quality of their actual products or services?

Frankly, it’s the way I always feel when I get someone’s resume and I find a typo in it. If this is how they treat their MOST important project (their own career), how can I possibly trust them with other things?

This, plus yesterday’s reminder about gut feelings…makes me want to interview differently.

Maybe I’ll start that process this week…

June 4, 2011 – Guts.

Listen to it.

I hate to admit it, but if there’s one lesson I have to learn over, and over, and over again…it’s to listen to my instincts.

So, as I RID this book today about gut feelings, I remind myself to trust my own.

Today…and for the future.

June 3, 2011 – On creativity, and leadership.

New trend?

So, I had a great meeting in NYC yesterday where we talked about leadership, and what’s happening within the fields of advertising and creativity.

So, today…as I RID this book about it…I remind myself to RID notions about these subjects which I don’t endorse…or consider relevant anymore.

Off…all.

June 2, 2011 – Coffee talk.

Many years, many coffees.

Over the last couple of months of the RID project, you’re going to see a number of “bigger items.”

One benefit of RIDding is — when the small stuff goes, you don’t need as much of the big stuff.

So, today the first of those items goes – a coffee table which used to hold some of the items you’ve seen on the RID blog over the last few months.

So today, off it goes…off to support someone else’s stuff.

And I’m better for it.

June 1, 2011 – Art and soul.

Design karma?

Today, I RID this book about merging your work, and your soul.

Have to admit, this has been a general theme of the RID project – how to identify those possessions, topics, and interests that are TRULY me – versus those that seemed interesting at the time.

The RID project has helped me identify and work with these topics.

It’s why I recommend that everyone do their version of it.

May 31, 2011 – CDs, the V’s.

Most Halen and Haggar.

CD day – the V’s!

Mostly Van Halen – not really a surprise, since they’re a band I’ve seen 9 times — since I was a sophomore in high school.

The other ones worth mentioning here:

Vampire Weekend – sorry folks, I just don’t get the appeal. I’ve tried. But just not my thing.

Chad Vangaalen – trust me on this one. Give it a listen. Quite experimental, but it grows on you.

Sort of  like the RID project.

May 30, 2011 – Seriously, how many picture frames does one man need?

Gone but not forgotten.

This’ll be the last picture frame given away for a while.

But, as I prepare to embark upon the last 2 months of the RID project, I must confess…

It’s getting hard. Really hard.

Looking back across the entries, it seems easy to categorize them by quarter.

Quarter 1 – REALLY easy RIDs, no pain…stuff I should’ve gotten RID of a lot earlier.

Quarter 2 – Things that represent passions I wanted to pursue, but not enough to keep them. Getting RID = releasing the obligation.

Quarter 3 – Emotional topics that prevented me from getting RID of the items. Getting RID = letting myself retain the memory in a new way.

Quarter 4 – True pain. Prioritizing items to RID means truly committing to the items kept. (Safe to say, I’ve thought once or twice about RIDding my obligation to the RID project.)

But we press on – two more months  to go. Approximately 60 more items.

Eager to see what develops.
