February 28, 2011 – CDs, the O’s.

Just not many that start with this letter.

Ah, last post of the month…CD day! Today, the O’s…

The Highlights:

Oasis – Call them Beatles copycats if you must, but the Gallagher brothers put on quite the live show…and their tunes always make a long drive down a freeway better, if you ask me.

Oingo Boingo – Speaking of live shows, I’ll never forgive myself for not going to see these guys when I had a chance.

Patton Oswalt – For my money, the best comedian in America. Maybe ever. Give his stuff a listen (it’s all over YouTube) — and you’ll wonder how such a tremendously caustic, foul mouthed master ever got the lead role in a Disney movie (even if he did play a rat.)

February 27, 2011 – On evolution.

We all evolve...some just faster than others.

This is just a great book, written by chief “skeptic” Michael Shermer.

It’s a great book, written to provide tangible, sensible reasons to argue for why evolution is too important to be treated as the political football its been made into in the U.S.

The truth is, I want to keep this book…it’s just great. But, by RIDding it, someone else will learn more about that darned “theory” that has become the subject of so much controversy within our education system.

And education…REAL education…is a good thing.

So…goodbye Darwin book…enjoy the survival.

February 26, 2011 – Darting out.

Gift from a friend.

An old friend of mine gave me these darts.

They’re really cool actually, but…just like I’ll never be one of those guys who brings his own pool stick to a game, I won’t be carting my own darts down to the pub anytime soon either.

Here’s hoping the next person who owns them has good aim.

February 25, 2011 – Suit up.

Again, commitment.

Simple entry today, as I’m hitting the road on my way to TED.

Today, I RID myself of a suit jacket…that used to fit me (better?) when I was heavier…I RID it today, as part of my commitment to never hit that weight again.

These, the clothes that I don’t fit into anymore (and that’s a GOOD thing) — are the easiest RIDs at all.

I RID this today, as a way of committing to myself.

Viva!

February 24, 2011 – Headphone t.

Loved it, but...time to go.

As I’ve blogged about before, I love my collection of t-shirts. And this one, which simulates a pair of headphones worn by a DJ…is one of my favorites.

But, I went back to my “rule” about tees I love – that they’re understood by about 10 percent of the population. A good t-shirt, to me, will get a knowing smile from about 1 out of 10 people…and a bit of a confused look from the rest.

Suffice it to say, this shirt is more like 75 percent. And so, today it goes.

Here’s to bigger messages to smaller audiences.

I know some brands who could learn from this.

PERSONAL ANECDOTE: I’d like to welcome the new readers I have to this blog, due to my speech at the Ignite event last night. I know you’re out there…I had more blog traffic yesterday than I’ve ever had before. So again, welcome. And more importantly, thanks for the kindness you showed me last night from the audience. It was a pleasure meeting many of you in person…here’s hoping I meet many more of you soon.

Once again, welcome.

February 23, 2011 – On media, and personification.

Personifying the media.

Tonight, I speak at the Ignite event in Dallas about the status of the RID project.

It seems only appropriate that today, I give away this book, about the nature of media…and how we personify media. What it means to our world, and how our culture moves with media.

Today, as I rehearse a few more times before the performance…I think, as always,

The media is truly the message.

February 22, 2011 – In a TV nation.

Indeed.

Today, I RID myself of this book about the production of “TV Nation” – for my money, Michael Moore’s best work. This is a TV series he did right after the success of “Roger and Me.” And the themes he was playing with turned into the movies he did later, about banking, healthcare, and the like.

During my time between jobs, I’ve watched a fair amount of TV. And while they don’t actually count as part of the RID project, I’ve RID myself of a few TV shows that I was watching just a few months ago. Lead among them,

“The Office” – sorry, but this series jumped the shark a long time ago. The truth is, it never reached the heights of the British original — but, like so many shoes, it became about the “wackiness” of the characters, rather than the office “truths” it exposed early in the beginning.

So here’s to RIDding ourselves of the TV we watch out of habit, obligation, or mere inertia. If nothing else, consider it freeing up the Tivo for something better you could be watching.

Like, for my money, “Shameless.”

February 21, 2011 – RID me a belt.

RIDding is what commitment looks like.

Since I’ve been RIDding myself of so many pants lately, I guess a belt was inevitable.

I was tempted to put the belt in the “stuff for stuff” category – since the only reason you need a belt is to assist other clothing. But then I got into a debate with myself about the contours of the human body…and suffice it to say…into the “clothing” category it goes.

Not really much to say about this belt…other than the fact that it worked with both casual and dress clothing…and that is no small feat for a man’s belt.

So, to RID it goes. And onward into the day…

February 20, 2011 – I love a good doc, but still…

Never watched.

There’s nothing I like more than a good documentary. They’re my favorite kind of movie.

But lately, I’ve found myself a bit awash in “National Geographic like” documentaries on earth, animal, and planet.

So…today I RID myself of this one. The first of a few.

Happy Sunday all. Go out and see some of that great planet we live on.

February 19, 2011 – Dreams realized.

Great tips on evangelism.

Today, I RID this book, purchased a long time ago…on product evangelism.

The unexpected result of the RID project is that it’s making me MORE of an evangelist because I own LESS. The products/goods I’m keeping in my house are the ones I’m truly devoted to, that mean the most to me, and are worth keeping.

Here’s to thoughtful consumption and promotion.
