February 8, 2011 – Another RIDgifting.

Bye, bye.

Here’s yet another t-shirt someone brought me from a vacation of theirs that I’m RID-gifting today.

This shirt makes me think about people who aren’t in my life anymore. Old friends who, for whatever reason, didn’t seem valuable to stay in touch with over the years.

It’s something I think about every time I get a friend request on Facebook. For all its negative publicity, Facebook has helped me rekindle friendships I’d neglected from long ago. And for that reason alone, I’m bullish on it.

Here’s to friendships unRIDded. People over items.

February 7, 2011 – *.

Apologies to Giants fans - but, hey...you've won the Series now, you can handle it.

Today, I RID myself of my Barry Bonds “*” shirt.

It celebrates when he hit his record-number of home runs. The * indicates he might have, just might have, had a little help.

Today, as I RID this item, I think about all the “little” ways we cheat…ourselves, our families, our workplaces, etc.

Here’s to RIDing old habits of cheating, and earning everything we get.

February 6, 2011 – Sing it sister.

A classic I'll never know?

Chalk this up as another RID item as something I thought I SHOULD read, rather than something I WANTED to read.

Not so much. Not more.

I hope the next person who receives this book WANTS to read it.

And now, they have their chance.

February 5, 2011 – Getting ready for TED!

TED to the RID.

We’re getting closer to this year’s TED conference, so I thought I’d RID this t-shirt, which a friend gave me to commemorate my TED speaking gig last year.

Not a long entry today, really…not really a lot else to say about this item.

But…it reminds me that I need to get cracking on my TED speech for THIS year’s conference, which is only a few weeks away!

Well, ’nuff said…to the Powerpoint!

February 4, 2011 – Again with the pants?!?!?

Last ones for a while, I promise.

Yeah, I realize I’ve gotten RID of a few too many pairs of pants lately.

And suffice it to say, they don’t exactly make for interesting reading.

So, this’ll be the last pair…at least for a while.

Enjoy the day off. That is, if you’re still inside in North Texas with yet another snow day…

Plastic memories.

“When collector Thomas Lindblad discovered a simple red mug, he was inspired to say the least. Some 15 years after his first encounter, the Nordiska Museum  in Stockholm Sweden has recently opened the Plastic! show which uses Lindblad’s collection of household plastics from the 1940s to the 1970s as the spring board for exploring plastics from its socio-political history, design evolution to human body politics.

The exhibition is divided into six disciplines, but perhaps the most interesting feature of the exhibition asks visitors to recount memories triggered by encounters with plastics. An act that accounts for an invitation to unite cultural production as it enables it.”

Story here.

February 3, 2011 – And indeed I am.

Never cracked.

My plan, during this period I have between jobs, was to go on a long roadtrip.

But alas, the weather in North Texas hasn’t cooperated…I’m snowbound in DFW along with the Packers and Steelers.

So…I give this book, a fitting tribute to the RID project.

Chalk it up as another one of those books I was “going” to read…that I “should” have read.

But never will.

On the road to On the road.

February 2, 2011 – a RID to the independent music store.

Another relic from the 206.

Today I RID this t-shirt, from Seattle’s best independent record store — Easy Street.

I often find myself, when I have extra time, wandering the racks at great independent record stores. I lament that so many of them have gone out of business, roadkill on the digital music road.

If you’ve got a great independent record store (or bookstore for that matter) — please patronize it as much as possible.

It’s a shame watching these go out of business.

February 1, 2011 – Another pair of pants.

Just not me.

And here is yet another pair of pants for the RID project.

Truth be told, I bought these pants to celebrate when I’d lost a bunch of weight. The problem was…while they were the right size, they weren’t right for me. I barely wore them.

So, as I cast these atop the RID pile today…I remind myself to celebrate life’s little victories often…but mindfully.

January 31, 2011 – CDs, the M’s.

Who knew so many musicians started with M?

Ah, CD day!

Today, the M’s…

The Highlights:

Ingrid Michaelson – If you haven’t stumbled upon the sound of this fantastic waif, I advise you to correct that….immediately. Just simple little songs written from love, loss, and happiness…an artist that I originally discovered at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle, and boy I’m glad I did.

Alanis Morrisette – I know I’m opening myself up to criticism by saying I like her as much as I do…but in my opinion, she underrated. This music is more important than she gets credit for.

Midnight Oil – I regret never having seen this band of Aussies light it up live. I’m sure they were great to see.

Shawn Mullins – In my opinion, nothing sums up living in Los Angeles as well as his hit, Lullaby.

Morphine – The #1 band I regret not going to see live. I’m not even going to try to explain their sound. Just find it on iTunes, and enjoy.
