January 4, 2011 – Wool Sweater (3 of 3)

Black, button-y.

Last of the wool sweaters today.

As I got RID of these 3 sweaters, it’s a helpful reminder of how much my climate has changed from Seattle to Dallas over the last year or so. In Seattle, I wore sweaters at least twice a week in the winter. In Dallas, a jacket is a better option.

I’ll be blogging about many changes from Seattle to Dallas in the next few weeks. In fact, I’ve been inspired by something about this move – a NEW project starting soon. (Maybe even another blog.)

Stay tuned.

The Moneyless Man.

“If someone had told me seven years ago, in my final year of a business and economics degree, that I’d now be living without money, I’d have probably choked on my TV dinner. The plan back then was to get a ‘good’ job, make as much money as possible, and buy the stuff that would convince society (and me) that I was successful.

And for a while I did — I had a fantastic job managing a big organic food company, a yacht on the harbor, and if it hadn’t been for a massive change in perspective, I’d still be doing it today. Instead, for the last 20 months, I haven’t spent or received a single penny. Zilch. My experience of this life-changing journey into the moneyless unknown, and the philosophy behind it, compose my book, “The Moneyless Man,” to which my proceeds are going to a Charitable Trust, details of which are in the book.”

January 3, 2011 – Wool Sweater (2 of 3)

Skull, bones.

Today, I give away another itchy wool sweater.

Today, my #17 Yale rugby jersey.

Goodbye #17 – make a run for it.

January 2, 2011 – Wool Sweater (1 of 3)

Itchy, scratchy.

Today is the first day of three in a row where I’m going to be giving up wool sweaters.

My allergies continue unabated, so I’m trying to eliminate possible reasons my allergies keep attacking. Today, we start on wool.

I found out there are some allergies to wool in my family…and maybe it’s attacking me now. Whatever it is, it’s time to try to get these darned things under control.

Goodbye wool sweater…and hopefully the allergy attacks with it.

January 1, 2011 – Book o’ comedy.

Pages and pages of laughs and laughs.

So, today begins the New Year, and with it the New Year’s resolution process.

I’ve made a resolution to try stand up comedy again this year, and today…I RID myself of this comedy book from the fine folks at McSweeney’s.

I offer this sacrifice to the comedy gods as a way of committing to my resolution – here’s hoping I see you all at an open mic soon!

The “100 Things” Challenge.

“By definition, “neo-minimalists” don’t have an overabundance of things in their lives. But one thing they tend to have more and more of these days is visibility. Recently, The New York Times talked to some people participating in the 100 Thing Challenge  about how it has affected their lives; The BBC looked into the “Cult of Less;” and here on Boing Boing, Mark has been getting down to the nitty-gritty of what the “lifestyle hack” involves. The common thread here is a growing number of people are realizing that our mountains of physical stuff are actually cluttering up more than just our houses. All of this is exciting to me, because it’s something in which I have a growing personal interest: I have been taking steps to get rid of the mountains of stuff I now realize I have no reason to hang on to. In fact, I’m not just doing it myself—I’m trying to help start a revolution.”

December 31, 2010 – CDs, the K’s.

Kiss and B.B. King are rarely used in the same sentence.

CD Day! Today, the K’s…

The Highlights…

KISS – Say what you want about the tunes…but if you never saw Peter, Gene, Paul, and Ace in concert while you had a chance…you really missed something special. The consummate showmen – they had no equal.

B.B. King – again, see him while you can. Nuff said.

Keane – I have to put these guys into the category of “most interesting debut album, most disappointing albums since” category.

The Kinks – In oh so many ways…the anti-KISS. The voice of working class Britain.

See you all tomorrow…happy New Year by the way.

December 30, 2010 – Workout bag.

Done worked....out.

As many of us get closer to our New Year’s resolutions, and so many of those are to work out more…I thought it’d be a good time to RID an extra workout bag I own.

Not really a lot more to say about this one.

Now, I’m done sitting around blogging for today. Gotta get out there.

December 29, 2010 – Buddha box.

It runs on ohms....

I hate unwanted distractions, and random noise.

I find our world today filled with meaningless noises that just aid our distraction, and make it harder and harder for any of us to have a coherent thought.

For a conspiracy theory, check into this.

I bought a Buddha box a few years ago. For those who don’t know what it is, a Buddha box is designed to emit a sound, a simple sound…there are 8 in this Buddha box to choose from. It’s designed to aid meditation, sleep, and the like.

I like mine…but I never use it. So, off to RID it goes.

Here’s to peace and quiet, as often as possible.

December 28, 2010 – Google me this.

Never used.

A gift.

An unused, original Google phone.

If ever there was a visible symbol of why the RID project was necessary for me…this is it.

I got this phone…and I had another one.

I got this phone…and still when it was time to buy a new one, I went with Apple.

I got this phone…and it languished in my closet for months.

Goodbye, unused Google phone. You, like Google itself, sometimes led to a bit of overkill.
