December 18, 2010 – A note on fiction.

Read a long, long time ago.

I never read fiction anymore.

As a kid, I used to love horror novels (Stephen King being tops on the list.)

But now, I only read non-fiction and/or humor.

I think I get enough fiction through the media (if you get what I’m throwing out.)

Anyway, I offer this horror novel, read long ago, to the RID pile.

I think I was hanging on to it to somehow remember and connect to what I was as a kid. But that’s what I am no more – I’m moving on, reading new things….savoring new experiences.

Much, much more on this later.

December 17, 2010 – Puzzle me this.

I'm not exactly in need of a time waster these days.

In preparation for my holiday plans, I’ve been looking within the box I’ve kept which includes puzzles, games, and the like.

Today, the puzzles go.

I’ve never really been a big fan of puzzles — but I have found that, for some reason, people love to put them together over the holidays – usually with family.

I’ll leave the reason for that blank. I have my theories.

And I’m sure you have your own.

December 16, 2010 – We all have our VICEs.

Think of a snarky blog written as a book.

If you’ve never seen VICE magazine, check out an issue.

These books are both “best of VICE” collections. One, a collection of some of their best articles. The other is the best of their DOs and DON’Ts collection where they take random photos of people on the street and make snarky comments about what they’re wearing.

Both these books are great, the humor that VICE provides is stellar and dead on, but obviously…I was never going to read these books again.

So today I cast them atop the RID pile to provide someone else the laughter these books provided me.

PERSONAL ANECDOTE: I’ve definitely returned home from my Cuba trip fully committed to the RID project. Spending a week around so many people who owned so very little gives me new momentum to reduce the number of things I own. The people of Cuba, with their generous smiles and happiness, are a new reminder of the difference between possessions and happiness.

December 15, 2010 – CDs, the J’s.

Again, very few artists start with "J."

CD day today!

The Highlights:

Jay-Z — Nothing to say other than “I’m not a businessman, I’m a BUSINESS, man!”

Jayhawks – It took me quite a while to warm up to these guys — but man, once I did…

Elton John – Captain Fantastic was one of the first albums I ever purchased….and to this day, I think it was one of the most complete albums ever recorded.

Jane’s Addiction – Kind of a shame I never got to see these guys live, not sure how I missed out on that…

December 14, 2010 – The Cuba RIDs – Some old shirts.

Done and done. And done and done.

Today ends the items I’m leaving in Cuba.

These shirts, all of which I like, but I just don’t wear nearly enough anymore…are headed to the RID pile.

I brought them along to Cuba, just in case I needed to wear something “a little” nicer than beach/resort wear while I’m there.

This is the last wearing of some items I’ve held on to a bit longer than I should’ve.

But…no longer.

December 13, 2010 – The Cuba RIDs – Undershirts.

Underperforming now.

I’m amazed at how many “basics” one man can acquire.

So…these simple undershirts are staying behind in Cuba.

In hopes they find someone who hasn’t overacquired.

To say the least.

December 12, 2010 – The Cuba RIDs – One safari shirt.

Orange you glad?

I’ve had this shirt for about 5 years…ever since my trip to Africa.

It’s served me well – it’s perfect in all sorts of weather…it’s easy to clean on the road…and it was ideal for a trip like my Africa one – when I needed a shirt I could wear for multiple days, with minimal care.

But, you see, it’s taking up room in my closet in Dallas when none of those conditions apply.

So, I’m using it for its intended purpose, one more time in Cuba. Then casting it to the RID project.

As it should be.

December 11, 2010 – The Cuba RIDs – Pants.

Pants, just pants.

I’ve had these pants for quite some time. In fact, they’re kind of my “go to” pair.

And that’s why they’re staying behind in Cuba.

I’m going to try to RID myself of the things that merely keep me comfortable, and in my patterns. To embrace and treasure the things that are of a CONSCIOUS choice, and are part of an ACTIVE approach to everything in my life.

Goodbye Mark Ecko pants…you were my favorite…and that’s why you’re going.

December 10, 2010 – The Cuba RIDs – Workout clothes.

Used in Cuba for the last time.

We’re coming up on the end of the year…a time when people make their resolutions.

Mine is to get myself back on my workout schedule I was on earlier in 2010. I’ve fallen off for a lot of reasons lately:

1) Too much travel,

2) Too much “other” commitments,

3) Too many excuses.

I brought these workout clothes to leave behind in Cuba as an offering to remind myself to stay on schedule, to stay after it…and to stay committed.

Here’s wishing you luck with all your resolutions in the new year.

December 9, 2010 – The Cuba RIDs – Sweater vest 2 dot oh.

Again with the sweater vest.

Yesterday, I gave away a sweater vest. And today, I give away another one.

Truth is, I’m not really sure why I’ve been holding on to this one for so long. I rarely wear it, and it really doesn’t have the distinctiveness I usually seek out when buying new clothing.

Here’s to giving away ALL the items in my life I’m not COMPLETELY committed to.
