November 3, 2010 – Speed.

RIDding might make Keanu sad.

Loved this movie when it came out.

Then…someone gave it to me for a gift…and I never watched it. That was three years ago.

Um…time to RID.

Goodbye Speed.

Godspeed.

November 2, 2010 – Wag the Dog.

Seemed appropriate today.

I loved this movie. It addresses what I believe – that most politics is now officially theatre, designed to manipulate voters. That’s why it’s more important, not less, that we take the time to vote. To be informed.

And it’s why I hate to admit…I’m not voting today.

Yep, I’m on the road.

So I implore all my friends to vote…please vote today…if you can. I’d hate to see any of my candidates lose by one vote today. Then I’d feel really bad. But somehow, I doubt that’s gonna happen. Not in Texas.

RID and RFID come together.

“Launched at this year’s Future Everything digital arts festival in Manchester, RememberMe is a collaborative project between TOTeM  (Tales of Things and Electronic Memory) and Oxfam which infused personal history into donated items by enabling people to attach stories to them using RFID tags.

People donating items at an Oxfam store in Manchester were asked to tell a story about the object into a microphone, including when and where they acquired it and any personal stories associated with it. The audio clips were linked to an RFID tag and QR code and items tagged with a story were added to the shop’s stock as part of the in-store exhibition. Visitors to the shop used their own smart phone or a bespoke RFID reader to listen to the stories through speakers in the shop, and were invited to purchase the story-tagged objects.”

November 1, 2010 – CDs, the F’s.

As always, memories...

Ah, another CD day…from 50 Cent to the Finn Brothers, here are the F’s.

A few highlights:

Flight of the Conchords -If you haven’t started watching this show on HBO, I implore you…go Netflix the first two seasons. This sendup of an Australian band is not to be missed.

David Ford – The sorrowful sounds of a UK folksinger. Tales of love and loss, sung in a way we all should hear them. Just genius.

Fatboy Slim – Speaking of “across the pond,” this mixmaster changed my relationship to sampling. Those who only know him thanks to a music video need to check more of his stuff out.

Goodbye F’s…find someone new.

October 31, 2010 – Animal House.

Exactly how many times have I seen this?

Happy Halloween everyone!

Today, I give away my Animal House DVD – here’s another great example of a disc I SHOULDN’T be hanging on to:

1) It’s on TV about every week,

2) It’s available digitally,

3) Seriously…I think I’ve seen it so many times I can probably say every line in the movie.

Goodbye Animal House, you’ve served me well.

Seeing this today makes me think about the friendships we have, in college and beyond. In this era of “friending” in such a casual way…I always wonder if I have enough good, tight friendships.

I’ve been through a lot over the last couple of years, and I’ve been able to count on and find some friends who have been instrumental in me retaining my sanity. For them, I am grateful.

Thinking about this is a helpful reminder of why I need to reach out and connect to my true friends more often. Perhaps I’ll get started today.

October 30, 2010 – First season of the Office.

Turns out we don't ruin ALL British entertainment.

The first season of the Office was, I thought, stellar.

But truth be told…I think it’s run its course.

Today I give the first season on DVD away…and begin to eliminate future recordings from my Tivo.

Here’s to knowing when to quit…on anything that’s outstayed its welcome.

Yoink? Yoinks!

Quick Pitch: Yoink makes it simple to give away your unwanted items and find free goods near you.

Genius Idea: For years, savvy Internet denizens have used the Freecycle network group in their city to give away stuff they don’t want and to find free items for pickup. The only problem with Freecycle is that everything is managed in Yahoo Groups, making the whole experience rather clunky.

Others have used Craigslist to accomplish the same task, but this approach can be time-consuming, both while searching for the exact item you want and while traveling sometimes-long distances to get it.

Yoink employs the exact same everybody-wins-when-we-recycle-and-reuse-goods mentally but modernizes the entire experience and makes it easy to find items near you.”

October 29, 2010 – Triumph of the Will.

You can learn sometimes from something so disgusting.

Today I give away the Nazi propaganda “documentary” Triumph of the Will.

It’s amazing to watch this film today, and realize how many of the tools used in this piece are still used today. Something to think about, as we prepare to vote next Tuesday.

This DVD is reminding me that I’m probably not spending enough time (especially here in Texas) working on some political cause or candidate I could be helping change things…for all of us.

I’m trying to keep political ramblings off this blog as much as possible. (If you care to understand my political philosophy, I’m more likely to post that stuff here.)

But the current state of politics IS something I’m worried about. I don’t know how we can go from an event like 9/11, where the world was troubled and on our side, to turn into an Islam-hating political climate. And I don’t know how we can go from the optimism and togetherness the last presidential election brought, to a point where we can mock people for “that hope-y, chang-y thing” just 2 years later.

Here’s to what brings us together. And to optimism.

Let’s see if we can’t find a little again.

October 28, 2010 – Sweater vest #2.

Not really a lot else to say.

The second Mark Ecko sweater vest of the RID project.

It is a bit odd how, as we come into the colder weather of the fall and winter, that NOW is the time I decide to give away sweaters…

Not really sure what this means,…

You, dear blog readers, will be the first to know when I figure it out.

October 27, 2010 – Four weddings, indeed.

Hugh Grant says, "Hello World."

Giving away this disc today makes me think about my own weddings (I’ve had two.)

As the father of a nearly 16-year old daughter, I’ve always been somewhat troubled by the cultural messages that are sent to our young girls…especially about their wedding day. They’re told that one day, they will be a princess…it’ll all go according to plan, they’ll be doted upon, it will be the one day that will change their lives.

But, so little cultural message is given to the MARRIAGE.

As a person who’s been married, and now divorced, twice — I’ll be the first to tell you…marriage is hard. Really hard.

But…that’s not gonna stop me from tryin’….and livin’.

PERSONAL ANECDOTE: I’ve been traveling a TON lately – so the last couple o’ nights, I’ve been catching up on my TIVO’d programs. (Yes, technically it’s a DVR…but I refuse to use that acronym.) I realized I’m feeling STRESS about catching up on TV, trying to watch a bunch of old shows before they get deleted. Boy, what a signal the RID project needs to be applied to saved TV programs! Expect more on this soon.
