April 9, 2011 – On living in extremes.

Ah, memories.

This frame contained…

(wait for it…)

A photo of me at a Miami Dolphins game.

When I lived in San Francisco.

And had a ponytail.

Now that I shave my head every three months, I dedicate this post to refusing to live in the gray area.

To being someone who is far left, but sees value in SOME conservative ideas.

To being someone who likes live theater, and live concerts, and quiet nights at home.

Viva emtremis!

April 8, 2011 – On trying new things.

Grounded.

Got it a few years ago…when I tried (and loved) a Tai Chi class in Arizona.

As I RID it today, I remind myself of the difference between enjoying a new experience by trying something new,

and LOVING something, and wanting to continue doing it into the future.

Goodbye Tai Chi DVD.

Off to someone who has that love.

April 7, 2011 – On humor.

Screamed at me to pull it off the bookstore bookshelf.

I’ve written in this blog about humor before.

I believe, now more than ever, it’s needed. And good comics…

(see: Patton Oswalt, Louie CK, David Cross)

are so needed now, to provide us commentary and philosophy rather than simply echoing the culture and providing cheap laughs

(see: Dane Cook, Jeff Foxworthy, etc.)

That is all.

April 6, 2011 – Urban tribes.

On gatherings.

RIDding this book today is making me think (once again) about the nature of gatherings, and how we (humans) aren’t doing enough of that anymore.

Short post today. Why? Because I’m off to New Orleans for the balance of the week. And I think I’ll make it a priority to interact with real live upright bipeds, rather than sitting around blogging.

See you tomorrow.

Or today, if you’re in the Big Easy.

April 5, 2011 – On briefs.

Small but useful.

Today, I give away a fine book about creativity by Paul Arden.

I RID this, even though I think it’s excellent…because I think so many people could learn from the lessons contained herein.

The biggest lesson I’ve been thinking about is the powerful impact a good briefing can have, when you’re asking for creativity out of a team. So many people try to inundate people with data, charts, etc….

When a well-written, one page brief is SO much more powerful.

So here’s to clarity in brevity.

Power in simplicity.

And frankly, not continuing to talk or write just to cover up what you haven’t done your homework on.

And what you don’t really know.

April 4, 2011 – Do or die.

As close to understanding the gang scene as this Iowa boy will ever get.

RIDding this book today about gangs, and the subculture that lives within them.

Truth is…I LOVED this book. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand what drives our youth to gangs, and what the life of a gang member is like. But, I read it…oh, so many years ago, and I’ve never gone back to re-read or consult it since.

So, off to RID it goes.

To inform someone else.

April 3, 2011 – On being selfish.

Evolution of self, perhaps?

I’m actually a big believer in selfishness – I think it gets a bad rap.

Taking care of yourself first, and making sure you’re healthy and happy, allows you to serve others better…at least in my opinion.

And I, for one, am happy genes work this way. It’s what has allowed us to evolve and improve over time.

And so, today — to celebrate a good selfish Sunday – I’m going to RID a book about just that.

Away! I’ve got other things I’m going to prioritize today.

April 2, 2011 – Experimenting with self.

A how-to book of self experimentation.

Those who have followed this blog for the last…(8 months!) will recognize that what started out as a bit of a personal project-has turned into something more.

A warped trip down into my own psyche.

A set of daily self-reflections.

A strange, addictive journey.

But most of all, it’s been an exercise of self-experimentation. And I can’t wait for the future ones.

By the way, my favorite self-experimenter can be found here.

So today, as I RID this book about how people self-experiment by self-decoration, I commit myself to always being a self-experimenter.

(Although maybe all self-experimentation doesn’t need a daily blog!)

April 1, 2011 – On comfort.

Just a blue hoodie, nothing really else to say.

Blue hoodie – how I’ll miss you.

You were always there on a weekend….easy to put on, no real statement made. Just pure comfort.

You were dependable that way – I never had to think about anything. Just sling ‘ya on….and go out to meet the world.

You made no statement. No stance.

No need to look twice.

And alas….that’s why you go today.

March 31, 2011 – CDs, the R’s.

So many of my faves...

Ah – a CD day! Today, the R’s.

The highlights –

Rainmakers – I know, I know…you’ve never heard of these guys. But, that’s because…unlike me, you didn’t go to college in the Midwest in the 80s. But trust me, these boys from Kansas City are one of the most unappreciated gems of that era. Alas, they never achieved the fame they deserved. I was thrilled to see them mentioned in a couple of Stephen King novels. At least he tried to shine the spotlight on them.

REM – I’ve blogged before about my appreciation for Mr. Stipe and the boys. My favorite band, hands down.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Add these guys to my list of regrets of bands that I never saw live. A shame really.
