March 10, 2010 – On traveling without travel.

The world might be flat, but the film isn't.

I’ve never been to India.

And that makes me like most Americans.

I was so impressed by this film, because it gave me a powerful narrative to start to explain this part of the world.

Today, I RID it in hopes someone else will open their eyes to India…this film sure helped me.

March 9, 2011 – The thing about opinions is…

Bleh.

Today I RID a Bob Garfield book about advertising.

The truth is, I didn’t really like this book. I can’t really think of one good reason I’ve been holding on to it this long.

There are very few items in my home like this. Items I held on to even after not liking them.

I don’t really have a lot else to say about this one. But I must admit, I’m a little unresolved on this one…why on earth would I keep something I didn’t even like?

Any ideas?

March 8, 2011 – On symbols.

A great read.

I bought this book prior to my trip to Cuba.

It’s a book not about Che per se — but about his most famous image…as a brand. The symbol of rebellion — why this particular image was chosen, what it seems to mean around the world, and how its image has been and is being distorted.

I always find myself picking up one book about the culture I’m headed to before I travel….it always connects me and reinforces the experience in a powerful way.

I RID it today, in hopes we open up Cuban travel soon…and it will help someone else understand the experience better.

March 7, 2011 – Norm!

Knowledge from experience.

This is a book written by Norm Stamper, the former chief of police in Seattle.

It details the life of a cop (at least one cop) in detail — and I found it a fascinating read…I had never taken the time to understand what it really means to sign up for that.

I bought Norm’s book after meeting him personally — and I probably wouldn’t have bought the book any other way…and I’m glad I did.

Norm’s opinions about drugs – that they should be de-criminalized (as opposed to ‘legalized,’ think Amsterdam)  are a testament to the knowledge obtained by those who are on the front lines, and who’ve really seen something.

I cast this upon the RID pile in hopes it opens the mind of the next person who gets it.

March 6, 2011 – And then there was one.

A classic.

Today, I RID the classic David Ogilvy book on advertising.

For some reason, (I assume multiple jobs, multiple offices) I found myself with two copies of this. So, off one goes.

I love this book. Many of its lessons are as relevant today as they were when D.O. wrote them.

A rarity in the ad biz to say the least.

Rest in peace D.O.

March 5, 2011 – Random bunch o’ books.

No theme here I can find.

Nope, there’s no theme in the books themselves.

Nor is there a theme about my interaction with them.

Some were read, some were not. Some beloved, some meh.

It was just time, for all of them…and so there isn’t really a lot to say. Which is why I bundled them into one entry, rather than blogging about them on separate days.

There’s a joy for me in that. After more than 200 days of RIDding items, I’m still eager to do more.

Viva minimalism!

March 4, 2011 – Life and what you make of it.

A life unwatched.

TED is ending today, so it seemed appropriate to RID something I got at the conference last year.

This set of DVDs, which I’m sure are really cool…just haven’t made it onto my “to be watched” list in over a year.

So, that’s about enough.

To RID it goes.

Such is life. (rimshot)

March 3, 2011 – Calling up a RID.

Call around.

I finally got around a couple of months ago to getting myself an iPhone.

Acute readers will say,”Hey, Dave gave away his Blackberry months ago.”

Yep. You’re right…THIS phone was the one replaced BY the Blackberry.

Uh huh. This phone has been hiding away in a closet, in a box…for about, uh…THREE YEARS.

There are times I hate technology.

Atop the RID pile you go.

March 2, 2011 – Marketing books.

Too much information.

Not really a lot to say about today’s RID collection – a bunch of marketing books I just don’t have a lot of use for anymore.

The people who work with me can tell you, I’ve got a lot of books in my office. So, it’s not by RIDding myself of these that I will go longing for work inspiration.

But truth be told, the books above haven’t been cracked open for reference or inspiration in years.

So, off they go.

March 1, 2011 – On building something great.

Got this years ago...who would've known I'd end up in Dallas?

Today, I RID this book detailing the building and motivation of the Richards Group, one of my advertising agency competitors in the Dallas market.

I RID it today…not because it wasn’t a good read, but because I have a lot of respect for what Stan Richards build in his company…

BUT it’s not appropriate for everyone.

While the Richards culture is build on a solid foundation, it’s quite a different foundation from what most of the agencies I have the highest regard for are built upon.

So I commend Stan, and the folks at his agency, for their commitment and their loyalty to a strong culture.

Even if it is built on something different from what I believe.
