February 18, 2011 – Back into the cult.

Hey! That's not nice...

Random book on advertising being given away today.

This book, one of many that I’ve kept on a bookshelf for oh too long – showed up in a box of books I had at my own workplace. Expect a number of these books to show up for the RID project, as I clean out my “old” bookshelf – and prepare for the new.

Books continue to be my weakness. I don’t like giving them away. I guess it’s because they represent a bit of an accomplishment when they sit, read, on a bookshelf.

But, no more…to the wind.

February 17, 2011 – On change.

Hmmm...

Today, I RID a water bottle that I had at my last job.

I start a new job on Tuesday, can’t really share a lot about it yet — but, suffice it to say,…it’s keeping me in Dallas.

When I originally moved here, I assumed I’d move out as soon as I was out of my old job. After all, after 20 years on the West Coast – why would I hang out in a red state any longer than I have to?

But, I’m staying…and in the last couple of years…I’ve definitely learned some lessons.

1) You can create your reality wherever you are – sure, Dallas is no Seattle. But there are pockets of the town that remind me of the Seattle I love. And, truth be told, I may treasure these little pockets more here simply because they feel so special.

2) It’s people who matter. While I left a lot of great friends in Seattle, I’ve made some powerfully important connections in the big ‘ol state of Texas. And, little by little, that’s making it feel like…”home.”

3) Travel makes me whole. The nature of my job, and of my personal desire, make me travel…a lot. And I’m coming to terms with the fact that I NEED that. To move, to encounter new things, and to constantly put myself in situations where I’m recognizing new challenges.

So, here’s to the city of Dallas…thanks for welcoming me. I must admit, you’ve surprised me.

February 16, 2011 – On denial.

Required reading.

Excellent book about how we, as a society, have fallen victim to conspiracy theories that are harming our ability to appreciate scientific advances.

Great read, if only for the chapter about how, when people deny their children vaccines, they’re screwing it up for ALL of us.

While I’m RIDding this book today, it’s off to a friend to read.

For once, I’m dedicating a RID entry to ask everyone to buy this book, read it, and then pass it along.

It’s just too important not to.

February 15, 2011 – CD’s, the N’s.

Memories of the 206...

Ah…a CD Day…

Here are the highlights…

Nirvana – when I originally moved to Seattle in 1989, it seemed like everyone was in the music business. I had the unique privilege of being in Seattle when it “blew up.” And, I got to see, and meet, so many cutting-edge bands at the time. My only regret? Never seeing these guys live.

Randy Newman – For my money, the most important satirist working in America today. Sure, disregard him if you like for the last few years, when he’s mainly made money scoring Disney films…but, if you look across his body of work, you’ll see biting social commentary that the world so desperately needs.

Night Ranger – At the risk of opening myself up to intense criticism in the comments section, I really liked these guys. They provided some of the key hits of my youth, and they put on a great live show…now, isn’t that was music is supposed to be about?

Wow, Night Ranger – Randy Newman – Nirvana. Variety is the spice of life, indeed.

February 14, 2011 – Futurethink.

A great read, provided you have the time.

Today, I RID myself of this book – a guide to the future…written as a humourous dictionary, by the fine folks at McSweeney’s.

Not really a lot to say about this book. If you like McSweeney’s…you’ll love this book.

I’ll admit, this is one of those posts I’m expecting to have people request the item.

So, comment away…free to anyone who wants it.

February 13, 2011 – I fear someday we’ll see an encore.

A great read for anyone who wants to understand the implications of political inaction.

Today, I RID myself of a book about how the AIDS epidemic spread.

Truly, the most depressing piece of non-fiction I’ve ever read.

Not really sure why I was hanging on to this. Read it oh, so many years ago…and it’s stuck in my mind well enough to never need to go back to it for a reference.

Here’s to evidence-based science, open-mindedness, and compassion leading our social policies.

February 12, 2011 – Mighty indeed.

Just not up to par in my opinion.

Today, alas…felt like an easy RID.

Today, I give away my “A Mighty Wind” DVD. Good, but just not great.

No Guffman.

No Best in Show.

Here’s to artists achieving their peaks.

February 11, 2011 – First frame.

Hadn't changed the photo since college.

I’ve decided I have too many picture frames, so for the next few weeks…I’m going to RID them one a week.

And, rather than talking about the frame, I’m going to talk about the picture that was in it.

This frame housed the picture of my parents and I at my college graduation.

My graduation was a huge step for me. Coming from a blue-collar background in rural Iowa, college was no guarantee. But I worked hard, and with my parent’s financial help, I graduated from Creighton University.

I think now (differently than I did then) that academics in college weren’t really that important. What was important was that I earned a degree, which would set up what I could earn later.

What college is valuable for, however…is getting to know who you are…and how to apply it. The socialization with friends, the ability to try out different majors, the ability to test and understand who you are.

Today, as I think about lifelong learning, that’s what it should be good for…to continue to test what you believe…and continually get to know yourself better. By understanding the world around you better.

Here’s to continuous learning…in all its forms.

February 10, 2011 – Boondocks.

Never really worked for me.

I’ve always enjoyed political/social commentary served up as humor and/or entertainment. It’s why I think the Daily Show might be the best show on TV right now.

It reminds me of when I was a kid, and I subscribed to MAD magazine. Even though people thought of it as a humor rag, it’s social commentary was biting to say the least.

Years later, I found myself aligned with the Bloom County readers, rather than the Doonsbury nerds. But that was just a matter of opinion. I found Bloom County to be the best use of the comic pages ever.

That’s what I hoped for when I bought this Boondocks collection. But, for whatever reason, it just didn’t work for me.

So, today I RID my Boondocks collection. Here’s hoping its social themes inspire someone else to larger action.

February 9, 2011 – On the body.

Never used.

Today, as I sit home on another blustery, traffic shutting-down kind of day in Dallas, I RID this software used to track health records. I got it a few years ago, and never have used it.

It’s a reminder that, even on the worst of days, we need to be active…to take care of ourselves, and to honor our bodies…so they honor us.

Stay active all, do what you can today.

Oh, and don’t drive to the gym if the roads are icy…bad idea all around.
