November 23, 2011 – on technology.

Tee hee x 140 characters.

Typing this on the day for Thanksgiving – a day on which I’m committed to turning off the iPad, the iPhone, and simply connecting with those I love.

Maybe that’s another RID project worth considering?

Happy day off, all…

November 17, 2011 – a note about the World Cup, the Olympics, and global competition.

Goodbye Aruba.

I’ve recently been working on an Olympics project for one of my clients.

It made me think about a couple of World Cups, so I decided to give this t-shirt away today. It’s from Aruba – where I was when the Dutch team was surging through the last tournament.

It reminded me of a visit I had years ago to Paris – on the day when France won the tournament.

So…as I RID this t-shirt today, I’m reminded of the central truth – that these events are for the fans. They help us bond, celebrate, and sometimes (the Miami Dolphins fan in me must admit) express sorrow.

So, today I RID this shirt in hopes it finds a true Dutch fan.

Onward.

November 11, 2011 – the TEDxPhoenix RID.

Was kind of tempted to play one last song on it from the stage...

Tonight, I give a speech on the TEDxPhoenix stage about the RID project.

I’m writing this entry pre-speech, but will post it immediately after.

You know, I really didn’t expect the RID project to strike such a chord with people (pun intended) when I started it. I simply started blogging the project because I thought it would keep me honest, and keep me doing it.

But there does seem to be something else about it – maybe we’re all looking for more simplicity, maybe we all have too much stuff, maybe it’s just interesting in some other way somehow – but I’m glad I did it, and even gladder I’m still doing it.

It’s become a way of life, a conscious form of giving on a weekly basis.

And, because of some news coming to this blog very soon…it’s also quite necessary.

More on that later.

November 2, 2011 – on policy.

Reunite, indeed.

Today, as I RID this t-shirt about “one world,” I’m writing this entry only blocks from the “Occupy Wall St.” movement.

I actually admire those who are active, who are taking a stand. Whether they be Tea Partiers or 99 percenters, I think all of us should respect those who’ve made the time and effort to make a statement.

Whether or not we agree with it.

So, today as I RID this t-shirt, I also RID some of my previous misconceptions about my “allies” and “enemies” on either side of the aisle.

Here’s hoping we can find compassion, agreement, and respect for one another.

October 27, 2011 – Some water bottles.

Just water bottles.

Having kind of rough day today. Kind of one of those “everything that could go wrong…has” kind of days.

The kind of day that reminds me to drink plenty of water.

So, it’s kind of ironic today that today I’m getting RID of water bottles. Two of them. Just don’t need them cluttering up the house anymore.

So, if you’ll excuse me…I’m off to the drinking fountain.

Where no bottle is needed.

October 15, 2011 – The TEDxOmaha RID.

Left on stage.

So today at TEDxOmaha, I gave a speech about the RID blog, the lessons learned from it, and the inspiration I continue to derive from it.

Seemed appropriate to give away a couple of items from TED and the TED bookclub.

I continue to be shocked how many people find inspiration and excitement from this little project I started (on kind of a whim) over a year ago.

Many thanks to the TEDxOmaha organizers and webcast viewers who were a part of today’s speech.

October 12, 2011 – Travel guitar.

Play on.

A number of years ago, I bought this guitar to travel with.

Suffice it to say, this was prior to the “two bag limit,” “extra charge for extra bags” days. So, given the fact that this is:

1. one of THREE guitars I own, and

2. not really practical for today’s travel realities,

it goes. Today.

Atop the RID pile.

Hopefully to be played more frequently than I was able to.

October 5, 2011 – Bumbershoot T. (Oh, and Bumbershoot.)

Never worn.

So, I went to Bumbershoot this year…I think for the final time.

While I love my yearly excursion to Seattle to discover and see new emerging bands, I think I’m now choosing to pick music festivals a bit closer to where I live.

So, in honor of my final Bumbershoot visit…I RID this shirt…one I got for free at this year’s festival.

Goodbye, Bumbershoot – you’ve helped me get to know so many emerging artists that are now part of my daily playlist…Cloud Cult, Ages and Ages, the Lonely Forest, Brite Futures, etc. etc. etc.

September – Mobile phone case.

Held several things.

Today I give away a great leather case — it’s held an iPod, a blackberry, an iPhone…you name it.

It’s made by this great company – I think this is the first brand endorsement I’ve done on this blog…and I own several products of theirs. This, I believe, will be the only one of those I RID.

Again, this entry exists as a “stuff for stuff” entry – items I own to take care of OTHER stuff. A category that, as the RIDding continues, I continue to see as more and more of a problem.

So, away with you, great mobile phone case…may the next person you go to cherish you as I did.

September 22, 2011 – Just you watch.

Flavor Flav, anyone?

One of the most common questions I get about the RID project is “do you still COLLECT anything?”

Yep, watches. I have nine.

Nothing too expensive. Nothing that fancy. I just love a good watch. No matter how many times someone younger says, “why even carry one anymore? Your cellphone has a clock,” I refuse. There’s just something about wearing a watch for me.

And I intend to keep…nine.

So, you see…I just bought one. So one must go. Must be RID.

And it’s this one. Simple. Elegant. Nice.

But now…excessive.

So, goodbye functional watch. You kept time perfectly. I enjoyed your simplicity. But as of now…

You’re just one to many.

Farewell.
