March 20, 2011 – Just another pair o’ pants.

See ya.

Another day…another pair ‘o pants.

Getting rid of these today is another example of something I’m giving away because I was TOO comfortable with them. They were a bit too much of a “go to” — a pair of pants I chose to wear because I really wasn’t CHOOSING anything.

So, getting RID of them today is a way of celebrating conscious decisions – and choices TO do things.

Goodbye, pair ‘o pants. Deliver your comfort elsewhere.

March 19, 2011 – Chasing cool.

Keep chasin'.

Yet another book.

In the months that I’ve been doing the RID project, it’s become obvious to me that books are the item I need to take more care when I buy.

I love hanging out in bookstores — wandering the aisles — finding things that would be “cool” to know more about, to follow up on.

So, as I RID this book on coolhunting today, I remind myself to take more care – to remember the next time I’m in a bookstore — only buy books that are TRULY interesting to me, that answer a true passion.

Wonder how that’s gonna work out?

March 18, 2011 – Heart of the game.

Inspiring.

Truly, one of the most dramatic and heartwarming documentaries you’ll ever see.

It’s about a high school girl’s basketball team – and their coach. Recorded over a one year period, you find yourself enthralled by the drama of real life.

Not what served up in “reality TV.” Real…real life.

I don’t really want to say anything else about it. Just trust me — go rent this one.

And to the next person who receives this from the RID pile? Enjoy.

March 17, 2011 – Silver frame.

Enjoy, next owner.

Short entry today.

This silver frame used to hold two pictures of my daughter, but they’re both from a time gone by.

So…the photos go in the scrapbook.

And the frame itself goes to the RID pile.

To be treasured again soon, I hope.

And more importantly, to hold treasured memories.

March 16, 2011 – Shocking.

I'm sure a great story...

I think we’re really interesting, in that we’re such social creatures — but we think we are SO individual.

I’ve always been fascinated by the experiments of the great sociologists and psychologists of our time.

Chief among those experiments was the famous “Milgram obedience experiments” where an situation was set up when subjects THOUGHT they were electrically shocking people, when in fact the experiment was just designed to see if people would comply with instructions given to them.

A bold experiment indeed – giving us insights into our own behavior, concentration camps, Abu Ghraib, etc.

Today, I RID a book not about the experiments, but about the man who designed them.

I originally bought the book shown above, because I wanted to follow-up on this great book, which I loved.

That other book? Still a valuable book in my library.

But this book? It leaves today.

Goodbye. Hopefully it will inspire someone else to investigate their own behavior.

Like why they blog about a private project, for example 😉

March 15, 2011 – CDs, the P’s…and a Q.

Mind 'em.

The 15th…A CD day!

Some highlights:

Liz Phair – What a mix of great music, sexuality, and lyrics that cut you wide open. I’ve always been a fan of hers, and in fact – am looking forward to seeing her live this Thursday in Dallas.

Pearl Jam – I remember being in Seattle when grunge took off, and it was like you had to choose sides between these guys and Nirvana. At that time, I don’t think anyone would’ve guessed Eddie and the boys would still be producing good music this late in their lives.

Police – Still just a classic sound. It’s amazing how often my “shuffle” reintroduces me to how innovative and interesting these guys were – so far ahead of their time.

Robert Plant – The original “bard” in my opinion. If you never got to see him live in his late Zep, early solo work….you missed out. Truly an artist.

March 14, 2011 – “Talking bout…”

For someone else's treasure now.

A simple picture frame that reads, “My girl.”

For years, I kept a photo of my daughter is this frame.

But, as I’ve blogged about before, my daughter’s kind of “grown up” now. And the picture that WAS in this frame just doesn’t look like her anymore. It’s from too long ago.

So I retire the photo itself to a scrapbook. And the frame? Well, that climbs atop the RID pile.

For someone else to hold their treasure in.

March 13, 2011 – Notes on art, comedy, and political subversion.

The power of satire.

South Park.

Matt and Trey have, in my opinion, created the most entertaining, biting commentary on our society we have in our culture right now.

And, (gasp) they do it every week.

I don’t know where they get the energy…and frankly, the nerve.

I RID it today in the hopes that it inspires someone else to create things that express what THEY believe about the culture we live in.

And I look forward to their results.

March 12, 2011 – On releasing things in general.

The difference between "interested in," and "passionate about."

This caption says it all.

This is a book on a subject I was “interested in.” Brain evolution and how it’s left us with the brain we have now.

But…I’ve decided to put my “dabbling” in evolutionary subjects aside for a while.

It’s hard for me…evolution and its effect on our brains is directly tied to my job, and to things that entertain me.

But, by casting this atop the RID pile, I make more room for breadth of knowledge about other subjects.

Viva.

March 11, 2011 – One of my favorite authors.

Inventing things.

I’ve mentioned his name before on this blog, Steven Johnson.

Go find a book by him – he’s written about language, culture, careers, where ideas come from…I can’t even describe the insight he brings to things.

But…this morning marks a new day in the RID project. I’ve been holding on to this one for…too long. The subject really didn’t work for me, but I’m such a huge fan of the author, I kept it because I was going to read it….

someday.

No more. Atop the RID pile it goes. Hopefully, the next person who gets it will be as inspired by the author as I’ve been.

Albeit in other works.
