January 21, 2011 – Box o’ psychology.

Never played.

I found this box of psychology cards a few years ago – and it seemed interesting…so I bought it.

And never really opened it again.

This seems to be a theme of many of the items I’ve RID – things that seemed interesting in a store, but not really that interesting once they got in my home.

The RID project has changed my orientation towards shopping. I hesitate a lot more before purchasing things these days, thinking about how the item could become one I simply RID.

Here’s to more considered purchases.

And the psychology within.

January 20, 2011 – On growth.

Day for a metaphor.

A lot has happened since I stared the RID project.

Suffice it to say, there are many items that are no longer cluttering up the Weaver household.

But the things I’m getting really excited about…are the things that are still here. The things I’m obviously committed to. The things I want, for some reason, to lead me to new insights and new opportunities.

I’m excited about the growth that comes…between now and July 31 (The last day of RID.)

So today, I offer up this garden watering item as my ode to growth. Let it come naturally, and in time.

January 19, 2011 – Some remember the 80s differently.

Bad music, bad politics.

So I just got XM radio, and I find myself switching over to the 80s channel every so often to hear tunes from the decade.

Sorry folks – but I think the 90s were so much better, in so many ways…

1) The emergence of grunge, and music that expressed a zeitgeist,

2) The end of Reagan-era policies of trickle-down policies and the like, and

3) The emergence of new technology companies that changed the way we think, feel, and communicate.

So today I RID myself of this book about the eighties.

Let’s leave them behind, shall we?

January 18, 2011 – Musings on “us.”

Hoping we're more than just markets.

Today I RID this book on customer relationships.

I’ve been thinking lately about loneliness – I’ve been operating under the belief that a lot of Americans are in fact, lonely. We are looking for connection with people, but we are stuck with Facebook “friends,” and sending out periodic updates about what we’re doing.

I went into a great coffee shop in Dallas yesterday, and was looking at table after table of people using their laptops, their smartphones, etc. I’ve never seen so many people together alone.

So, here’s to getting outside…and to interacting with people. Real people.

The kind of thing that brings us together — for friendship, for connection…and not merely for commerce.

January 17, 2011 – Brands, A to Z.

Meh.

Today, on a rainy day in Dallas, Texas…I RID a book on branding.

Not really a lot to say — kind of a “low motivation” day here. Not much to comment on, or to say.

Just giving away a book I should’ve given away a long time ago.

More motivated post tomorrow, I hope.

January 16, 2011 – Home and work.

Musings about boundaries.

I’ve written in past entries in this blog about how much I think Americans need better (and more) separation between home and work.

I envy the relationship most Europeans have with their workplaces, and I think Americans could use the better emphasis on separation (and taking vacations, but that’s another post.)

So today I RID myself of the book above which is a philosophical book about the separation between work and home. Ironically, a book I bought…in Europe.

January 15, 2011 – The end of my daughter’s “Sweet 16” week.

This ISN'T mine, but this is what it looked like.

Thought I’d save this one for a big day…or a big week.

As her 16th birthday present, I gave my daughter the vehicle I keep in Seattle so she could trade it in for something more her style.

So, as of now, my Nissan Frontier is officially a Subaru sedan.

Enjoy the car, Dev.

January 14, 2011 – On blue and white collars.

On origins.

Today I RID a book about reconciling your white-collar job with your blue-collar origins.

I am proud of where I came from. My Iowan upbringing always reminds me to be kind and listen to everyone, irrespective of their stature or position.

Someone sent me this quote yesterday:

” You can tell a big man by the way he treats little men .” — Thomas Carlyle

I wish more people lived that way…

January 13, 2011 – Yes, the RID project is getting tougher. Why do you ask?

Pale pail.

As we come up to what is ALMOST the six month point (halfway) on the RID project – the items are getting harder and harder to give up.

The truth is, the first few months were pretty easy. Now, that urge to hang on to items is getting stronger. The easy stuff? Already gone.

So, today I offer up this pail. Nothing really to say about it, other than the fact that for some reason, I was hanging on to it.

It’s one of those items I suppose we all hang on to – it has an obvious use, but even if you don’t really use it, you hang on to it…because “someday you will.”

Well, not anymore.

This pail should’ve probably been earlier in the RID project’s bucket list.
